Historical Time Line

NEWCO Safety Tel, Inc. founded in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and began manufacturing a generation of rotary dialed or intrinsically safe hazardous area telephones for use in the presence of locations of dangerous explosive atmospheres.

Developed a fully integrated ruggedized DTMF (dual tone multi frequency) telephone within an explosion proof enclosure. DTMF is known under the trademark Touch-Tone for use in push-button telephones. This was the first phone approved for Class I, Division 1 explosive proof locations that required no special wiring or barriers.

Received first large North American contract and manufactured ruggedized DTMF phones for hazardous areas, allowing customers to take full advantage of the features available with their existing telephone systems.

Guardian Telecom Inc. was incorporated to build on Newco’s innovations. The development of the explosion proof telephone equipment led to diverse innovations and designs for new communication systems within various ruggedized, hazardous environments in other market sectors.

Guardian Telecom, Inc. began manufacturing and distributing ruggedized telephones and paging equipment for the Oilfield, Refinery, Marine, Mining, Utility, Power, Chemical, Petrochemical, Manufacturing, Transportation, Construction and Commercial Industry. The newly developed telecommunication equipment endured environments such as salt spray on board ships and dockside, high temperature areas, high humidity, shock and vibration in hard-rock mines, corrosive chemicals, dusty potash mines, vandal-prone public locations and weather-exposed construction sites.
